A container vessel grounded at Chattogram Port on Monday afternoon after suffering a technical steering failure while navigating the port channel, prompting an immediate rescue and salvage operation by maritime authorities.
According to Chattogram Port Authority Secretary Syed Rafayet Hamim, the incident occurred at approximately 14:15 hrs when the container vessel MV CNC URANUS lost steering control while transiting the channel.
The vessel subsequently struck No. 2 Red Buoy before making contact with the retaining wall, resulting in the grounding of the ship.
Following the incident, tugboats Kandari-4 and Kandari-11 were deployed to the location and are actively assisting in the salvage operation to refloat and secure the vessel.
All relevant maritime authorities and response agencies, including the Bangladesh Navy and the Bangladesh Coast Guard, have been fully mobilized and are coordinating efforts to ensure the vessel’s safety and maintain navigational security in the port channel.
“No casualties have been reported. The channel remains secure and open,” Syed Rafayet Hamim said, adding that further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
Authorities are continuing to monitor the operation and assess the vessel’s condition.
